Revolution Works
The Black Freighter is from Bertolt Brecht's 1928 Threepenny Opera. It is sung by the Pirate Jenny, a young woman working in a hotel who is oppressed by men and society. The revenge that she wants for the wrongs done to her comes from a black freighter which sails in flattening the town with it's guns. After the ship docks men pour forth from it and gather up Jenny's enemies:
They are chaining up people and bringing them to me,
asking me" Kill them now or later? Kill them now or later?"
Noon by the clock and so still on the dock
You can hear the fog horn miles away
In that quiet of death I'll say: "Right Now!"
Then they'll pile up the bodies
and I'll say: "That'll learn you!"
Then the ship, the Black Freighter, sails out to sea
and on it is Me!
